Weightlifting for Sports Performance

Weightlifting is extremely beneficial to sports performance.

Weightlifting has many transfers to other sports and can help you improve in your sport. The benefits of weightlifting are:

  • Enhance coordination and range of motion – Olympic weightlifting requires coordination of many multiple groups and joints working together. This improves inter-muscular coordination which is needed in sports performance. The positions that weightlifters go into also help athletes be able to move well and helps with injury prevention.
  • Improve work capacity and economy – Olympic Weightlifting requires precise coordination, timing, activation of the muscle groups. Due to this, the nervous system becomes very efficient at recruiting muscle fibers during the movements. This translates to better work capacity and economy over time.
  • Improve power production – Olympic weightlifting requires explosive power and force production. The nature of the lifts helps athletes develop power and force production which helps transfer in other sports that involve sprinting, jumping and other explosive movements.
  • Improve dynamic stability – Due to the need to have a heightened sense of body awareness and proprioception, the body over time develops dynamic stability especially in the catch phases of the lift. Athletes also will be receiving heavy loads while needing to balance to make the lift. The need for dynamic stability is high which then will transfer over into all other sports.
  • Increase in confidence and self esteem – as athletes progress and improve in the lifts, their confidence and self esteem tend to increase. This will carry out to their sport(s), allowing them to perform at their best.
  • And many more!
